CV Fraud! Research has revealed that CV fraud is on the increase with 49% of CVs containing lies and incorrect information. A Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Survey has discovered that 28% of CVs contain “very serious errors” which could mean anything from made up references to exaggerated qualifications or time spend abroad or in prison. We have long since asked employers to check candidate’s details when they advertise roles themselves, our own survey several years ago found that employers did not have time, needed staff quickly or just forgot. This is not “Good Practice” and any employer worth his salt must recognise that he must make enquiries about staff he is thinking of employing. The simplest way to prevent CV fraud is to vet candidates thoroughly and gain permission to carry out the basic background checks. This would be: Has the employee permission to work in the UK? Work through the CV systematically with the candidate. Check vague dates Check time in each role Ask for details of travelling abroad. Apply for references. Asking the candidate to sign a declaration that the CV is their own and a true and honest reflection of their working background. Breach of Contract. All employment contains an implied term of trust and confidence and if the employee is found to have lied may be in breach of this obligation. Where breach is “fundamental” an employer would be within their rights to dismiss without notice or pay in lieu and any salary or associated costs of employment may be reclaimed.
